Ekinözü, Turkey — February 6, 2023

The second major earthquake in the 2023 Kahramanmaraş sequence struck nine hours after the first M7.8 event, compounding the destruction across southern Turkey and northern Syria. The twin earthquakes combined to kill over 56,000 people and represent the worst natural disaster in modern Turkish history.

Left-lateral strike-slip rupture on a different fault segment of the East Anatolian Fault System than the M7.8 earlier the same day.
