2015 Nepal Earthquake
Gorkha District, Nepal — April 25, 2015
The 2015 Gorkha earthquake killed nearly 9,000 people and injured over 21,000 others, destroying approximately 900,000 houses. Historic temples and monuments in the Kathmandu Valley were reduced to rubble. The earthquake triggered massive avalanches on Mount Everest that killed climbers at Base Camp.

Tectonic Cause
Thrust fault along the Main Himalayan Thrust where the Indian Plate subducts beneath the Eurasian Plate. Nepal sits directly above one of the most active continental collision zones on Earth.
