The 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake sequence produced two M7.7-7.8 earthquakes within nine hours, devastating ten Turkish provinces and parts of northern Syria. It was the deadliest earthquake in Turkey in modern history and one of the deadliest worldwide in the 21st century.

Tectonic Cause

Left-lateral strike-slip rupture on the East Anatolian Fault (EAF), a major plate boundary fault that had been identified as overdue for a major earthquake. Multiple fault segments ruptured simultaneously.
