The 2018 Fiji earthquake is one of the deepest M8+ earthquakes ever recorded, occurring at 600 km depth in the upper mantle. At this extreme depth, no tsunami was generated and surface damage was minimal, though the earthquake was felt across a wide area.

Tectonic Cause
Deep-focus earthquake within the subducting Pacific slab beneath the Fiji region. At 600 km, the earthquake occurred in the transition zone between the upper and lower mantle.
