1995 Russia Earthquake

Sakhalin Island, Russia — May 27, 1995

The 1995 Neftegorsk earthquake destroyed the town of Neftegorsk on Sakhalin Island, killing 2,000 people — nearly two-thirds of the town's population. All of the town's five-story Soviet-era residential buildings collapsed completely, underscoring the catastrophic failure of Soviet seismic construction standards.
