Noto Peninsula, Ishikawa, Japan — January 1, 2024

The 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake struck on New Year's Day, killing 241 people in Ishikawa Prefecture and triggering tsunami waves up to 5 meters that struck the Japan Sea coast. The earthquake was the deadliest to hit Japan since 2016 and devastated the remote Noto Peninsula's traditional communities.
