Palu, Sulawesi, Indonesia — September 28, 2018

The 2018 Palu earthquake triggered a localized but devastating tsunami in Palu Bay and caused widespread liquefaction that swallowed entire neighborhoods. The combination of earthquake, tsunami, and liquefaction in a densely populated area killed 4,340 people and left 70,000 displaced.

Strike-slip earthquake on the Palu-Koro Fault, one of the fastest-moving strike-slip faults in the world. The geometry of Palu Bay amplified tsunami waves entering the narrow inlet.
