Prince William Sound, Alaska — March 28, 1964

The 1964 Good Friday earthquake is the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in North America. The ground shook for nearly four minutes and the resulting tsunami devastated coastal communities across Alaska and caused damage as far south as California.

Tectonic Cause

Resulted from the subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the North American Plate along the Aleutian Trench. The rupture zone extended about 800 km.
